Key takeaways

  • A dining set for 8 to 12 with chairs pushed in.
  • A sectional or conversation set grouped together under one cover.
  • A large round dining set, 60 inches or more in table diameter, with 6 or more chairs.
  • A sofa, two lounge chairs and coffee table pushed together to share one cover.

Extra large waterproof garden furniture covers are made for sets wider than about 100 inches or rounder than 90 inches, and the ones that stay waterproof combine a coated fabric of 600D or heavier, taped seams, roof vents and a center support to stop water pooling. At these sizes, the cover’s biggest enemies are not rain soaking through the fabric but wind lift, sagging puddles and seam failure, so size and structure matter more than the waterproof label.

When a Set Needs an Extra Large Cover

Standard patio covers top out around 90 to 100 inches long. You are in extra large territory if your furniture is any of these:

  • A large round dining set, 60 inches or more in table diameter, with 6 or more chairs.

Covering a grouped set with one big cover is usually cheaper than buying four or five individual covers, but it is harder to handle and catches more wind.

Size Chart for Large Rectangular and Round Sets

Furniture setup Footprint with chairs in Cover size to look for
Rectangle dining, 8 seats 108–120 x 62–70 in 120–126 x 72–74 x 28–30 in
Rectangle dining, 10 seats 130–142 x 66–72 in 140–150 x 74–80 x 28–30 in
Grouped lounge set (sofa, 2 chairs, table) 110–130 x 80–100 in 124–140 x 90–110 x 30–32 in
Round dining, 60 in table, 6 chairs 88–96 in diameter 96–100 in round x 28–30 in
Round dining, 72 in table, 8 chairs 100–110 in diameter 110–120 in round x 28–30 in
Large round fire pit conversation set 110–130 in diameter 124–140 in round x 28–32 in

For a large round garden furniture cover, measure the diameter from the back of one chair to the back of the chair directly across, then add 4 to 6 inches. Round sets with an odd number of chairs are wider in some directions than others, so measure two or three times across different chairs and use the largest number.

What “Waterproof” Means on a Large Cover

No fabric that stays waterproof for years is also fully breathable, so cover makers choose a trade-off. On large covers, these differences show up fast because a bigger roof collects more water.

Construction Waterproofing Breathability Typical life in full exposure Price range, XL size
PE tarp-style (woven polyethylene) Waterproof when new None 1 season $30–$60
420D polyester with PU coating Water-resistant to waterproof Low 1–2 years $45–$90
600D polyester with PVC backing Waterproof Low 2–4 years $70–$140
900D–1200D polyester with PVC or TPU backing Waterproof Low 3–5 years $100–$200
Solution-dyed acrylic or polyester Water-repellent High 5+ years $200–$450

The fabric rarely leaks first. Water gets in at needle holes along seams, at the umbrella opening and where pooled water presses on the fabric for days. Covers with taped or heat-welded seams across the top panel handle large sizes far better than stitched-only seams.

The Three Problems Unique to Oversized Covers

1. Pooling

A 10-foot table top is a lake under a flat cover. A sagging puddle of 2 gallons weighs about 17 pounds and stretches the fabric, forcing water through seams. Fix it with:

  • An inflatable or telescoping cover support placed in the center.
  • Two supports, one at each third of the table, for tables over 96 inches.
  • A cover with a built-in pole pocket or dome support system.

2. Wind lift

An extra large cover has 80 to 120 square feet of surface, which acts like a sail. Look for:

  • Vents on at least two sides of the roof to release pressure.
  • A drawstring hem with toggle plus 4 to 8 buckle straps around chair or table legs.
  • Choosing the snug end of the size range, since loose fabric flaps and wears.

3. Handling

A 600D cover for a 10-seat set can weigh 6 to 10 pounds and spans more than 12 feet. Two people make it a 2-minute job; one person struggles. Padded handles on each end help, as does rolling the cover from both ends toward the middle when removing it so debris stays on top rather than tipping onto the cushions.

One Big Cover or Several Smaller Ones?

Factor One extra large cover Individual covers
Cost Usually lower overall Higher; 4–6 covers add up
Setup time Fast with two people Slower but one-person
Wind performance Weaker; large sail area Better
Pooling risk Higher on dining sets Lower
Flexibility Set must stay grouped Use some pieces while others stay covered
Storage when off Bulky Easier

Picking by Climate

  • Pacific Northwest and other wet regions: 600D+ with taped seams, vents and center supports; breathability matters because furniture rarely dries.
  • Sun Belt and desert climates: UV resistance first. Coated polyester degrades in two or three summers; solution-dyed fabrics last longer.
  • Snow regions: heaviest cover you can manage plus a peaked support; brush snow off after heavy storms to avoid collapse.
  • Coastal and windy sites: buckle straps, snug fit, and a cover with reinforced corners.

Care for a Longer Cover Life

  1. Clean furniture and let it dry before covering for the season.
  2. Rinse the cover with water and mild soap twice a year; dirt holds moisture and feeds mildew.
  3. Never store a damp cover folded in a shed.
  4. Re-treat with a fabric water repellent spray every year or two once water stops beading.
