How to Choose

• Room Size Coverage: Always choose a purifier rated for a larger room than you need. For example, if you have a 300 sq ft bedroom, opt for a unit rated for 400-500 sq ft to ensure effective air changes per hour.
• Filtration Type: Look for True HEPA filters, which capture 99.97% of airborne particles down to 0.3 microns. Activated carbon filters are essential for odor and VOC removal.
• CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate): Higher CADR numbers for smoke, dust, and pollen indicate faster purification. Aim for a CADR that matches or exceeds the square footage of your room.
• Noise Level: Check the decibel (dB) rating, especially for bedrooms or quiet living spaces. Many purifiers offer a “sleep mode” that significantly reduces fan speed and noise.
• Filter Replacement Cost and Availability: Factor in the ongoing cost of replacement filters and how easy they are to find. Some manufacturers offer filter subscription services.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I replace air purifier filters?

Filter replacement frequency varies by model and usage. Generally, HEPA filters should be replaced every 6-12 months, while carbon filters may need replacement every 3-6 months if dealing with significant odors. Always refer to your specific air purifier’s manual for recommended intervals.

Are air purifiers effective against viruses?

Yes, HEPA filters are highly effective at capturing airborne virus particles, which are typically in the size range that HEPA filters are designed to trap. Maintaining clean filters and running the purifier consistently can help reduce the concentration of airborne viruses in a room.

Can air purifiers help with allergies?

Absolutely. Air purifiers with True HEPA filters are excellent for reducing allergens like pollen, dust mites, pet dander, and mold spores from the air, providing significant relief for allergy sufferers.

How do I know if my air purifier is working effectively?

Signs include a noticeable reduction in odors, fewer dust particles settling on surfaces, and improved respiratory symptoms (if you suffer from allergies or asthma). Many modern air purifiers also have air quality sensors that provide real-time feedback on the air quality in your home.
